How much is too much?

This is a long and rambling post, a lot of what is happening in this country is pissing me off. Yeah I guess you may call this a rant. Times have changed so much – and sometimes not for the better, sadly.

1. When I was growing up, one of my grandmother’s reprimand for rudeness was, “Do you know why the tongue is in the mouth? So that the teeth can bite it if it says something nasty. Go bite your tongue!” Parents often said “If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything”. Agreed that it made one a pushover and we did say a whole lot of things to each other in a round about way, but never direct. Sometimes the rudeness of the youth disturbs, but I can understand and appreciate the honesty and confidence they have in themselves. No hiding behind smokescreens and webs of words for them.

What I can’t understand is the reality shows … like Sach Ka Saamna, Rakhee Ka Insaaf. That woman Rakhee is horrible! Why did she call a young man with self esteem issues “Napunsak” and “Namard”? The fella went and committed suicide! Sheesh!! Why do people have to wash their dirty linen on national television? What’s with this world??? Did she think she was being ‘frank’ and ‘honest’? Why is she so much “in-your-face”. Why do t.v. chanels give her so much airtime? That woman is toxic.

2. Another person who is making my blood boil is SPS Rathore! Actually it is not the Police officer who is bothering me. He is what he is, otherwise he would not be accused of such heinous crimes. What bothers me is that he seems to have gotten away. What bothers me is abuse of office, of the law and of the system of the land. Another product of the times – as a nation we have become shameless. We use our office as a perk. Office cars are used to pick and drop our children, something that was unheard of when I was a girl. Let us not even begin to talk of misuse of office cellphone and office net. We do that with impunity (I am guilty too). So I guess people holding powerful offices abuse them to greater extent. And it is done shamelessly, without any kind of guilt. Even if it drives a young girl to suicide, gets a little boy to be paraded naked on trumped up charges, even if it destroys a family.

3. I know that it has become a fashion to berate politicians. We are a nation full of heavy asses and long tongues. The asses we use to sit in our cushy couches and office chairs, and the tongues we use to complain about the system. Damn it, we are the system! And we are doing nothing to improve it. I can scream about Kalmadi and about Raja. I can weep about the money being looted, money that could be used to build hospitals, orphanages, provide health care and social security to the very poor. The money that could build roads …. help battered women build a future. As a citizen it is my right to demand answers …. but how many of us would actually want that job? We don’t want to work, we don’t even want to vote!

What sort of country are we handing over to our children?

And We are Born Cynics

We are waiting for disaster to happen ….

All of us are buying milk and provisions, scolding wayward kids who have gone out to see a movie on this damn day (Yep all my brood is watching a movie in Delhi!)

Some of us are panicking and wanting to hang a cross on their door to buy some safety.

Not a bad idea I must say ….. since all Gods are the same and all religion leads to God ( so I devoutly hope).  Its another matter that these days it just seems to be an excuse to kill, burn and miam!

I hope and pray I am proved wrong and things remain peaceful.

With Love to the Martyrs

Bhagat Singh 27 September 1907 – 23 March 1931

The Government is busy, and they do not see any need to do chamcha-giri for our departed freedom fighters. They also do not need to bother about inflation, scamsters and other sundry problems. Of course if today were the birthday of any one of the Gandhi-Nehru clan the newspapers would have been full of Birthday wishes and such like stuff.

Today is the birthday of Bhagat Singh. I feel that our freedom fighters were full of idealism, patriotism and perhaps the history of our nation would have been different had they come into power. Of course the rationalist and cynic me also wonders if it would have been better or worse ….. Romantic rebels do not make good pragmatic leaders.

I admire Bhagat Singh for his patriotic spirit, zeal and idealism. He, to me, represents a beautiful dream that India has yet to achieve. Shine on superstar, wherever you are ….

Mera Rang De Basanti Chola Rang De Rang De
Rang De Basanti Chola Maiye Rang De
Mera Rang De Mera Rang De

Nikle Hai Veer Jiya Le Yun Apna Seena Taane
Has Has Ke Jaan Loota Ne Azad Savera Laane
Marke Kaise Jeete Hai Is Duniya Ko Batlana
Tere Lal Chale Hai Maiye Ab Teri Laaj Bachane
Marke Kaise Jeete Hai Is Duniya Ko Batlana
Tere Lal Chale Hai Maiye Ab Teri Laaj Bachane
Azadi Ka Shola Banke Khoon Rago Mein Dola
Mera Rang De
Mera Rang De Basanti Chola Maiye Rang De

Why shouldn’t I?

I have followed a very simple thumb rule in life. Of course its got me into trouble, its also earned me a lot of joy and love.

The thumb rule is this:

1. Think from your heart (I know, I know, my brain isn’t there, but it works for me)

2. Say things without thinking them over (Popularly termed as foot-in-mouth-itis)

3. Apologizing unrestrained-ly when I realize that I have hurt a person I did not mean to hurt ( Normally happens when the kids kick self-absorbed me in the shins ouch!)

4. Generally staying true to my conscience i.e. praising what is good and raising my voice against what I think is wrong.

5. Always reminding myself I wasn’t born to win a popularity contest (I am not a politician or a cine diva so I can get away with it)

Now I am fifty plus and I think I have got my act together, but some things really get my goat!

I put this as my status message on Facebook

At least Lalit Modi and IPL did not shame us like Kalmadi and Co.

and this on Twitter and Buzz

In any other country Suresh Kalmadi would be held and prosecuted for treason.

And I get this message on my phone

Avoid negative comments about CWG at this point on social networks as many foreigners read this

Hello, I am angry. I will speak out – the whole damn country has been taken for a ride by some inept and corrupt bunch of jokers. People in power are shifting blame. These guys have undone all the hard work done by the common man. People have gone abroad and won a reputation for being hard working and intelligent. People in this country have worked hard (no not the leaders but the common man). Yes, progress in our country has happened in spite of our politicians and leaders. You and me and our neighbors and co-workers have done it. Our money has been robbed and we have been shamed.

Keep silent? No I can’t.

Why shouldn’t I speak out?

Rant over!

Patriotic or naive?

I am proud to be an Indian. I say this in all sincerity, I have seen my childhood in the early sixties, which was rather simple. That was a time when we scarcely had a car in the neighborhood, the streets were empty most of the time and had two wheelers driven by men without helmets. I don’t remember streetlights. People who had refrigerators could be counted on your fingers and our teachers used to implore the fortunate ones to take fellow class mates to our homes to show them one. That was the India I knew. It had homespun philosophy. A sales man came to our neighbor’s place to sell pressure cookers. She pointed at her cook and said “I apply pressure, he cooks”.

We have had sixty three years of independence. India has progressed a lot materially. We have a life of ease and comfort that was only found in Vilayat or Amreeka (England or America). We still have strong bonds with our family, we have not lost our connection with our culture, though we are strongly engaged in the pursuit of the materialistic. I have always felt that this is not bad for a young nation. I got into an argument with Bikram.  I took exception to his blog post which I felt was India bashing.  We got on chat and we discussed my reservations to his post.  Then I re-read his post, which, I have to admit has a lot of truth.  He said, “Ritu bhen, Japan and Germany were smashed to bits during the world war and are far ahead of us now”.  I agree.  I also feel that China is bigger than us and has coped much better with population and progress.  So what ails us?

I recently was a judge for Blogadda’s Mera Bharat Mahan Contest, and I saw how much good work young idealists were doing for the country.  We make our nation, I believe that.  In my own way, I do social service for the nation too.  But let us push this further – we need quid pro quo.

WE ARE DOING A LOT FOR THE NATION, SINCE WE ARE EARNING PRODUCTIVE MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY

SOME OF US ARE DOING SOCIAL SERVICE IN THEIR SPARE TIME TOO

MOST OF US GIVE TO CHARITY

John F Kennedy may have said

“Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.”

But after 63 years of independence, we will not be out of line to demand a quid pro quo from our country and its leaders – who we have elected in a lawful and democratic way

I would like to rephrase John F Kennedy’s quote

I as a citizen of the largest working democracy would like to ask our beloved nation,

My India, My India’s Leaders,

what are you doing to inspire us to do more for the country

We Indians are a verbose lot, we talk and argue so much.  But many of our youth go and clean rivers, clean beaches, many of us die for the nation.  So we act too.  I think what we need is accountability from our country and its leaders.

I love my country and want to see it at the top.

Good Bye

It was long past midnight.  He was standing alone in his room overlooking the vast sprawling grounds of his house.  The doctor had told him that he should exercise a bit ….. which at 85 years of age he found laughable.  He looked out …. the grounds were flat and the trees dusty.  He felt a huge wave of homesickness for the hills he grew up in.  They did not have much in his youth, but what they had was fresh and untainted. His aging lungs longed for the fresh air of the hills.

Delhi had given them so much.  He had joined politics, and had swiftly risen in ranks.  Now his ministry was bringing in a huge project ….. and as was the norm, people who wanted a piece of the action had trooped in during the last week with suitcases full of currency.  Those bags of currency were all over the house, in his room even.  The staff was not being able to cope with the task of concealing the lot.

There was a time such things thrilled him.  It was all a game.  But he was an aged lion now.  The chase was beyond him and the kill did not thrill him.  He wanted to get away, but like all men who ride the tiger, he knew it was impossible.  His party, his sons, his employees would not allow him to go easily.  The hills, his village would have to wait ….. There was game afoot. There would be time to say goodbye soon.

He heard a movement, a bag was being torn from inside!  He stared, and a slight figure, almost that of a child ripped open a soft bag and came out.  The person was dressed in a mask and a cat suit.  The shock was too much for his aging heart. He watched helplessly.  The person took photos of the many bags in the room with a cellphone.  He shuddered as a pain gripped his chest, and the person swiftly shone a torch at him.  The minister was having a heart attack while he witnessed a sting operation in his own house.  He fell on the floor.  The person hesitated, then picked up a pillow to place under his head.  Currency notes spilled out of the pillow case!

“Goodbye Minister” said the person while taking pictures of the minister lying on a pillow case from which currency notes were spilling out.

CWG : Crores in my Wallet and Ghar

Jim Carrey commented on Tiger Woods’ countless affairs that came out of the woodwork – he noted that if a husband is philandering to the extent that Tiger Woods appeared to have been, his wife would have had some sort an inkling.

By the same logic, if there was a scam of such a huge scale, it seems impossible that the Delhi Government and the Sports Ministry had no clue about it.  And the mild response of our Government in power – I don’t know, it reminds me of my Mom trying to protect my younger brother from getting a completely justified bashing from me or a punishment from my Papa.   Its as though they are saying “Shush, stop making such a racket.  Kalmadi has been a bad naughty boy and will get his ears boxed soon.  Let the games happen, baad mein sab kuch karenge”.  My question ……. Kya karogey Bhai?  Are you hoping that the furore dies down, we have a rocking Games based on total jugaad and the public forgets?

Ma always said ” Shant ho jao, varna Papa ko yaad aa jayega aur bahut marenge”.  I see the same look in our netas eyes.  Puhlees, we have about sau crore abaaadi, and there is no one suitable who can take over from Mr. Kalmadi and company?  Don’t insult our intelligence.

I am peeved!  Its my money ….. makes me feel like not paying taxes at all.  Godji, I am sorry, but I feel like the CWG has not only made a chu@#$ya of the Government (i.e. unless the Govt netas also had a cut in the booty)  but also of us, the tax paying public.  Or – given the stupid way they forged documents and drew out contracts, they actually thought they were dealing with a nation of morons.  Such amateurs!   No wonder they got caught.  I do wonder how the smarter and more intelligent folk who have their hands in the galla(till)  go about it!   These morons diverted 750,000 crores, how much money must the uncaught intelligent ones have diverted.  Where have they diverted it to?  Can I go with a bag there and collect some?

Sorry Godji, I will do penance for this immoral thought, but it is sooooo tempting

Its okay to be moralistic and bemoan our national pride being flushed down the gutter.  I think all of us do feel – in our own way – our collective shame.

But (since I have an evil but practical mind) I do wish I had not educated my sons for the careers they have chosen …. I wish I had sent them into sarkari naukris, in positions where they had the opportunity to make such money.  Then I would have been justified in saying CWG ka matlab hai : Crores in my Wallet and Ghar

My Hero! I love Shah Rukh Khan

1.  He has the cutest boyish smile – and the twinkle in his eyes Oooooh!  I normally go for the hot muscular bodies but something about the guy just works for me.

2. He is non-filmy and comes through as fairly grounded – even though he is this huge larger-than-life hero

3. He is a good father and a family man

4.  Oh Did I mention his good looks? ~ never mind, it can be repeated

5. He’s versatile, like the papplu that makes the winning hand.  You can pair him with any leading lady from Kajol and Shilpa to Anoushka and voila – you have a hit

6.  You can watch him in brooding intense roles as the hockey coach of a woman’s team and it works, you can watch him as a shy dude or a cold and unscrupulous Don, it works

7.  Oh did I mention the boyish dimpled smile – oh I did – never mind

8.  He is from Delhi and that is nice

9. He proudly proclaims that he is a Joru Ka Gulam, that is so refreshing!  He comes through as humane and normal.  Either he is a damn good actor or is genuinely grounded and balanced.

10. But most of all I love him for the way he has refused to back down in face of the bully boy tactics of Raj Thackeray and his tribe.

I love his Badshahi Andaaz here

Article from Bollyspice

This is Shah Rukh Khan‘s request to those threatening to stop the screening in India of his latest movie My Name is Khan releasing next week. At the London press conference on Wednesday, King Khan was quizzed about his stand and candidly spoke about it. “As a Hindi film hero who’s given an iconic status, it scares me to say anything. Our stakes are very high. I want to apologize to Karan Johar, Kajol and the MNIK team because what I say and believe is going to affect their work and I have no idea how to change that.”

His recent comments supporting Pakistani cricketers playing in India has cause right-wing organisation Shiv Sena to threaten the screening of his film in Mumbai. They have even burnt effigies of the actor as well as Aamir Khan who has the same stand.

In the past although his colleagues have apologised to Shiv Sainiks, Shah Rukh has a different approach to it. “I really don’t know what the issue is about and what do I need to apologise for. Am I supposed to retract to I’m an Indian but I don’t want anyone to come to my country?”

This incident has also affected Shah Rukh emotionally. “When a film releases, you are tensed but highly excited and I work for that excitement. But this time I am just sad and it is not jetlag.”

Amitabh and Jaya Bacchan apologised, Karan Johar apologised.  I never understood why.   But Shah Rukh took a stand!  I truly love and respect him for this!
